According to an old legend, in medieval times the territory between Narni and Perugia was haunted by a Griffin, and while the two cities were in war, the decide to join their forces to kill the beast.

The Griffin was killed by the arrows shot by the bowmen belonging to the two armies, and the two cites decided to keep each one a part of it as a trophy: Perugia held the bones of the Griffin (white) and Narni its skin (red). That’s why today the Perugia’s Griffin is white and the one of Narni is red.

Narni’s coat of arms was granted by Presidential Decree on 12th October 1951, with the following blazon: "a silver red griffin".
