The Narni’s territory is rich in springs which have been used since ancient times for the water supply of the town.

A tour discovering the springs of Narni.

Narni is a natural attraction thanks to its springs that, from the cliff to the Nera river, make its territory rich in the most important element for life.

The ancient Feronia Spring.

The Feronia Spring, placed close to the Albornoz Fortress, is maybe the most ancient spring in Narni.

Dedicated to one of the most ancient divinity of the Umbro-Sabina area, venerated before the Roman hegemony, Feronia embodied the eternal spring and was celebrated in Narni with a special place of worship like in  Terracina, and Ferentino, Preneste, Amiterno, Pesaro, Viterbo.

The sacred spring of the ancients Nequinati was in the past surrounded by a woods of shady oaks (a lucus), with attached a temple and a statue of the Feronia goddess.

Now the water flows inside a building through a cane placed in a bas-relief where there is an inscription with the name of a governor who restored it during the 16th century.

The Spring of Santa Rosa.

The Spring of Santa Rosa is placed along the Gole del Nera on the right shore of the river, in the space between what were the two galleries of the former railroad about 2 kilometers from the departure of the cycle-pedestrian path.

The spring and its fresh and light water is channeled with a tube that crosses the road above, it flows into a fountain.

The Spring of Lecinetto.

The Spring of Lecinetto is placed on the right shore of the Nera river about 3,5 kilometres from the departure of the cycle-pedestrian itinerary, in the Recentino location.

Seems that its name came from the holm oak that in the local language is also called “lecino”.

At the beginning of 1900 in this area was made a small bathouse which used the water spring, called  famine and was made a plant for the bottling of water that has different depurative properties. Until 1943, although limited, the spread of the water had crossed even the borders of Italy.

Unfortunately the war and the bombing destroyed the plant and the area.

The Stifone Spring.

Continuing along the Gole del Nera, on the left of the river rises Stifone, that we could define as a village of springs: here we count several springs.

Inside the village , going down towards the old wash houses, there are two springs , one that comes out from the rock and the other swirling which passes near the tanks: the Springs of Stifone.

These waters, as well as for civil ones, have been used in the past, to operate large mills and ancient ironworks that worked the mineral quarries on Mount Santa Croce.

Always on the same street of the village, going towards the valley, you can see a big tank, deep of clear water with accentuated light-blue reflex which goes up from the deep from where comes out in pression a torrent of water, following the popular tradition, from the mountain of San Pancrazio.

The Collenibbio Spring.

The Spring of Collenibbio, today’s fountain, is placed near the Vasciano location, under Borgaria and close to the beautiful Church of Santa Pudenziana

Really ancient, doesn’t seem to have underground galleries , but despite this is interesting because in an adjacent field have emerged abundant portions of opus spicatum, ceramics and also found two fragments of clay stamps.

The caput aquae of the aqueduct of Formina

The most important historical spring for Narni is the Caput Aquae of the Roman Aqueduct of Formina, that is placed 8 kilometres from Narni on the Bandita Mountain downstream of Sant’Urbano.

The aqueduct , through four bridges and three tunnels, has been supplying Narni of water for almost two years.

Today it is possible , with departure in Narni, to arrive at the springs through a splendid itinerary, the Ancient Trail of the Aqueduct of Formina.
