Entering the Cathedral of Narni, from piazza Cavour it’s suggested to go in the center to look at the building in all of its elements: it will be easy to understand the scope of the monument and the choice of certain architectural elements, that made this monument one of the churches to visit in Umbria.

The elements of the central aisle.

The inside of the church appears simple and characterized by architectures from the original building in Roman style.

In particular, the three naves punctuated by the regular alignment of the columns, divided by two rows of 8 that support the lowered arches: a characteristic of the area narnese, as seen both in the Church of Santa Maria Impensole and in the Church of San Martino di Taizzano.

The harmony of the dimensions is immediately perceived, which stands out as a sure proportional criterion: the length, 44 meters including the thickness of the wall, is exactly the double of the width, without including the fourth aisle which preserves the sacello .

The vault that covers the building dates back to the fifteenth century. The triumphal arch is twofold: a Romanesque one that opens onto the transept and the second Gothic one that opens into the apse.

The Renaissance ambos.

Particular are the renaissance ambos, transformation of others pre-existing as you can see from the traces of cosmatesco existing in the inside part of the stone and from the remains of the frames. On the right ambos there is engraved the date 1490.

The shape is particular and refined is the decoration, especially in the bas-reliefs that adorn the plutei: on the right Saint John the Baptist and Saints Peter and Paul, on the left the Madonna with Child and Saints Juvenal and Cassius.
